Get a personal and realistic insight into what life in Hungary was like after the Second World War, during Communism, and what has happened since. Our Communist tour Budapest provides our guests with an interesting first-hand account of life before and after the Iron Curtain was present and it helps to understand the local way of living, you do not only see the city from a tourist’s viewpoint.
Sights of this interactive adventure include the downtown of the Pest side of the city:
The Saint Stephen’s Basilica (you hear different stories than on the Original Tour).
Your guide leads you to the Szabadság (Liberty) square.
We visit the secret exit of a military bunker.
The tour continues to the last standing Soviet war memorial, which is a communist memorial in the inner city and other symbols of “Soviet friendship”.
We walk past the 1956 uprising areas, the Bronze Bullet Memorial, and the beautiful Parliament building of Hungary.
Please note that our Budapest Communist walking tour is not a classical sightseeing walking tour as the downtown area of Pest has very few sights to see from the Communist era, but it is more like a university lecture. So, less walking than the Original tour, but a little more talking. Most of the statues from the Communist era were removed from the city center after the regime change in 1989, and there is a statue park called “Memento park” on the outskirts of the Buda side where you can see some of them.
