Jews played a significant role in the economic and political development of Buda during medieval times. There were both Ashkenazi and Sephardic communities in Buda Castle Hill. Both groups had their own synagogue located on the former “Jewish Street” . You can still visit a 1 room Jewish Medieval house of prayer that was built at the end of the 14th century.
It was excavated in the mid-1960s, which was followed by renovation works. There are medieval frescoes inside the synagogue with a star of David that is accompanied by Aaron’s blessings.
