Shoes on the Danube. On the edge of the Danube embankment a short walk from the Parliament, you find a collection of 60 pairs of shoes sculpted in bronze. All sort of shoes.
This was the place where Jewish men, women and children were executed. It happened in 1944-45 winter by the Arrow Cross Party Militiamen. Before they were shot to the river, victims were ordered to remove their shoes. Shoes were valuable items that time.
These 60 pairs of shoes were placed on the stretch of the riverside. It is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust. Our Free Budapest Tour stops here. We give you authentic and personal summary of Budapest Holocaust in few minutes. You have time to look at the shoes and at the river behind them. The children’s shoes will bring tears into your eyes. Never again!
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: The site is open all year long. There is no entry fee to visit the Shoes on the Danube Memorial.
